Save Misk’s Future
Misk Barakat .. the beginning of a life waiting for a chance at treatment
Misk’s mother holds her baby daughter in her arms and speaks about the examinations, scans, and operation she needs. The little one is still at the beginning of her life, but concern for her health has become a daily part of the family’s life, and access to treatment has become a wish the mother is striving to fulfill and asking for help to achieve.
Misk Barakat’s story began before her birth, when her mother was carrying her in Gaza during a period she describes as days of famine. She says she could not find enough good food or the treatments she needed. The months of pregnancy passed in harsh conditions, and then Misk came into the world to begin a new journey of medical follow-up and the search for care.
Concern that began at birth
According to the mother, Misk was born with a small opening in the fontanel area, which then closed after a short time. After medical imaging was performed, the family learned that their daughter needed surgery.
Since then, the family has had to complete the necessary examinations to understand Misk’s condition and prepare her for treatment. The mother explains that her daughter needs a computed tomography scan “CT,” as well as additional images and tests, so doctors can assess her condition and determine the details of the appropriate intervention.
Behind these procedures is a child in need of care, and a mother waiting to understand more clearly what her daughter is facing and what must be done to protect her. Every required test is a step on the path to treatment, and every step needs resources and support in order to become possible.
Fear for what the coming days hold
Misk’s mother conveys what she was told about the possibility of complications that could affect her daughter’s health and development if the operation she needs is not performed. This possibility weighs heavily on her waiting and pushes her to ask for help to complete the examinations and reach treatment.
The mother speaks of great fears for her daughter’s future as she holds her and looks at her. She wants to give her a chance to grow and to be able to take the required medical steps, and not remain trapped by the difficulty of providing what the operation requires.
What she asks for is clear: assistance that will make it possible to carry out the tests, complete the medical assessment, and secure the operation and the care associated with it according to what the treating team decides. She is seeking practical support that turns concern into steps that can be taken for her daughter.
Treatment begins before the operation
When we hear that a child needs surgery, attention may turn to the operation alone. But Misk’s mother’s account makes clear that reaching it is preceded by a path of scans, tests, and follow-up, and that providing these requirements is an essential part of help.
The family needs someone to stand beside them on this journey and help them secure what is needed to assess Misk’s condition and prepare for her treatment. Contributing to the cost of a test or medical image can help complete the information doctors need, and supporting the cost of the operation can bring the family closer to the care it is seeking.
And in circumstances in which the mother lived through a lack of food and treatment during her pregnancy, these needs add new responsibilities. That is why supporting the family eases a tangible burden and helps her focus on caring for her daughter and following up on her condition.
Misk has the right to a safer beginning
Misk did not choose the circumstances into which she was born, and she has the right to receive the care she needs from the very beginning of her life. She deserves to have her examinations completed, to reach specialists, and to be given the chance for treatment based on an assessment of her condition and needs.
And her mother deserves to find someone who hears her request and stands by her side. She carries her daughter and asks for help to perform the operation, holding on to the hope that what comes next will be more reassuring and that she will be able to care for her daughter without being unable to meet the demands of treatment.
Misk is one of many children in Gaza whose families need support to secure examinations, operations, and medical care. Behind every case is a child with a life worthy of attention, and parents striving to provide what they can, waiting for a hand to help them with what is beyond their ability.
