A Mother’s Heartbreaking Cry .. The Story of the Child Saba Awad
Saba Awad .. Eight Years of Treatment, and a Mother Fears Her Body May Fail Her
Even when Inesaf is in the hospital, receiving oxygen and needing care, her daughter’s question remains present in her heart: who will continue Saba’s treatment? With this question, a mother sums up her fear for her little girl, after spending years accompanying her to hospitals and striving to secure what she needs so she can grow up in better health.
Saba Awad, a child from Gaza, is about eight years old at the time her mother’s testimony was recorded. Since her birth, her journey with hospitals and treatment has begun. According to her mother, she suffers from malnutrition, anemia, and rickets, health problems that have made medical follow-up a constant part of her life.
For eight years, her mother has tried to stand by her, search for treatment, and hold on to the hope that her daughter’s days will become more comfortable. Then displacement came to add new hardships to this journey, and to make securing shelter and basic needs another burden alongside illness.
Three Days in the Street
Inesaf says that the family was displaced from Sheikh Radwan neighborhood toward the port area, and that she spent three days in the street. Three days without shelter, during which the mother carried the burden of her family and greater worry for her daughter, who needs food, care, and follow-up.
Saba appears in the video beside her mother inside a tent, where the family is trying to manage life with what they have. But the tent does not end the hardship of displacement; there are still daily needs to secure, and a treatment journey that must continue despite the harshness of the conditions.
For Saba, proper nutrition is an essential part of her health needs. With her suffering from malnutrition, anemia, and rickets, assistance in providing nutrition and medical care becomes direct support for a child who needs someone to help sustain her growth and health, and ease her family’s burden of caring for her.
A Mother Who Needs Care So She Can Continue Caring for Her Daughter
Inesaf prays that God grant her health and a long life so she can continue Saba’s treatment journey with her. It is a prayer filled with a mother’s love, but it also reveals a real fear; she herself suffers from health problems.
She says that at times she experiences convulsions at night, and that she needs emergency care, and may receive oxygen in the hospital. In those moments when she needs reassurance about her own health, her thoughts turn to who will care for Saba and continue her treatment.
Thus, the mother’s need for care overlaps with her daughter’s need for her. She tries to remain able to accompany her, and to find the strength to continue what she began since her birth. Her love reaches the point where she wishes she could give her daughter some of her own years, just to see her well.
This family needs support to lighten some of this burden; support that helps continue Saba’s care, and gives her mother some reassurance that her daughter’s needs will be seen to by someone who cares and helps secure them.
Childhood Deserves More Than Waiting
Behind this treatment journey is a child who has the right to adequate food, health care, safe shelter, and days that leave room for play, learning, and rest. The difficulty of securing these basics should not consume her childhood years, nor should her mother bear alone the worry of continuing her treatment.
Saba needs medical follow-up and proper nutrition for her condition, and the treatment prescribed by specialists. Her family also needs help with daily necessities, so they can continue caring for her amid the conditions of displacement.
These needs may seem varied, but they come together toward a clear goal: that Saba receives a better chance at health and growth, and that her mother finds what helps her continue caring for her without every step depending on what she can manage alone.
A Mother’s Appeal to Someone Who Will Hear Her
At the end of her testimony, Inesaf appeals to compassionate hearts and living consciences to look at her family’s situation. She says she hopes her cry will be heard; words carrying the exhaustion of years of follow-up, the harshness of displacement, and a mother’s fear for her daughter and for her ability to remain by her side.
This appeal can find a tangible response: a contribution to treatment, nutritional support, or help with basic needs that eases the family’s burden and supports the continuation of care.
Saba is one of many children in Gaza who need this support. Children whose need for treatment, food, and care continues day after day, and families doing all they can while needing someone to share the responsibility.
